May 16 - 22, 1999 - 60 alumni, teacher-monitors and then Program Director Martine Dion went to Newfoundland-Labrador to celebrate NL's 50th anniversary of joining Confederation. The tradition of offering special alumni trips has continued to the present day.

EWC teacher-monitor Benoît Bourdeau won the "Name the Puppy" contest and the Harlequin poodle, acquired by Director General Linda Brunet earlier in the month, is officially dubbed "Foxy” for the first time, in honour of great Canadian hero Terry Fox, and becomes Encounters’ official mascot.
