The Canadian Unity Council presents plans for the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre
Canadian Unity Council (CUC) member Hal E. Wyatt and CUC President Roger Larose revealed the new plans for the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre. The CUC founders felt strongly that the program must "make a significant impact in promoting a better understanding of Canada among young Canadians." In 1982, the CUC purchased the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Ottawa and began eight months of extensive renovations to transform it into a self-contained residential complex for the Encounters with Canada program. The facility was officially named the "Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre" in October 1982, as a tribute to the young Canadian whose courage and determination while battling cancer inspired the entire nation.
