The Official Opening Ceremonies of the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre and the Encounters with Canada Program
The Official Opening Ceremonies of the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre and the Encounters with Canada program were held on this date, although the program had started earlier that year on September 19. His Excellency, then Governor General Ed Schreyer (1979-1984) with his wife, Lily, presided over the ceremonies. They were joined by EWC’s Law participants and such dignitaries as Terry Fox’s parents, Betty and Rolland Fox; National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations David Ahenakew (1982-1985); then Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada (1980-1990) and later Chief Justice (1990-2000) Antonio Lamer; eminent Canadian lawyer, law professor, dean, and scholar Maxwell Cohen; noted Canadian historical portrait artist, Irma Coucill, who drew two iconic portraits of Terry Fox that are still displayed in the Terry Fox Centre; then Minister of Communications, The Honourable Francis Fox (1980-84), later Senator (2005-2011); and then Secretary of State of Canada (1982-1984), later Senator (since 1997), Serge Joyal, to name a few.
