FAQ

NOTE:  Please read our comprehensive "Youth" FAQs as well. They contain most of the information related to the EWC youth experience, our facilities and the logistics of youth registration and participation.

Q. Why should my teen attend Encounters with Canada?

We believe introducing Canadian youth to our country's diverse cultures, perspectives, ideas, institutions, leaders, career options, heritage and contemporary issues, opens their eyes to the vast potential of their lives, their communities, their nation and the world. Providing a platform where Canada’s youth voices are valued and heard leads to a strengthening of these voices, of youth leadership in Canada, and of our nation as a whole. This is an opportunity like no other.

Q. Who runs the EWC program?

EWC is one of the many acclaimed programs of Historica Canada, and is recognized and endorsed by the Ministry of Education of every province and territory in Canada. EWC’s team consists of recruiters, educators, youth engagement professionals, highly trained security personnel, marketing and communications experts, medical staff, a travel agency, maintenance staff, and professional chefs. Our staff is joined every week by dedicated teacher-monitors from across Canada and energetic workshop facilitators/speakers. Q. Who endorses this program?

Encounters with Canada has been recognized and endorsed by every Ministry of Education in every province and territory across Canada, and receives generous funding from Canadian Heritage, Veterans Affairs, the RCMP and more. Youth participation in the EWC program is also officially recognized by the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program.

Q. What does it cost for my child to participate in the EWC program?

Participation costs $675, which covers all program supplies/activities, meals, accommodation, site visits/tours, travel in Ottawa, etc. Some provincial governments provide funds to students who wish to attend the centre, therefore your child’s fee may be reduced. (Your local EWC regional coordinator will inform you of the final cost.) Your child’s travel to and from the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre is generously paid for by Canadian Heritage!

All prices are in Canadian funds.

Refund Policy: Once payment is received, the Encounters with Canada program offers no refunds.

Q. How much "pocket money" will my child need?

This is a difficult question to answer, as it depends on you and your child. Once a week, participants attend an evening cultural event in the capital, so you should plan for this. There are several options for your teen to choose from, which range in cost from $8-$22. On the Friday, students have a half-day in downtown Ottawa for personal shopping. Bob’s Canteen, located at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, sells snack food and a variety of EWC souvenirs (shirts, bags, etc.). There is an ATM on site should your child need it!

Q. How can I ensure that I am kept informed throughout the entire registration process?

My Encounters is a special website for EWC participants. It is where your child will go to register for our program, get important participant information from EWC, and stay in touch with their EWC friends after their week with us is over (when they register for the EWC Alumni Community). When signing up for My Encounters, your child must provide two email addresses as primary contacts. One of these addresses should be YOURS. This way, you will be copied on all important messages sent your child by EWC through their My Encounters page.

Q. How does EWC ensure the safety of my child during travel?

Regardless of your child's mode of travel to and from the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, an EWC representative is there to greet your child immediately upon arrival in Ottawa. We then bring your child directly to the Centre to settle in. Our EWC staff also ensures your child is safely on his/her journey home. Once registered, your child will receive information about travel plans and emergency protocols through his/her My Encounters page.

Q. How does EWC ensure the safety and well-being of my child while at the Centre?

Your teen is supervised by EWC staff and 6 teacher-monitors all day. (Nothing gets by us!) In the evenings and overnight (from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m.), EWC also has a Security Team on alert! This professional and highly trained team works to ensure the uncompromised safety and well-being of all participants, volunteers and staff at the Centre. Surveillance cameras and emergency "panic buttons" are located throughout the Centre and our grounds. Internet security settings and monitoring assure safe browsing at our "Café Internet." All of EWC's staff are trained in first aid and CPR, emergency protocols are in place, and a nurse is on site for one hour per day.
