Historica Foundation and The Canadian Unity Council reach deal on Encounters with Canada
Encounters with Canada, the widely-acclaimed youth program, will continue to offer young Canadians a special opportunity to learn about the country, its institutions and each other. The program, which will mark its 25th year of activity in 2007, has welcomed 73,000 high school students, aged 14 – 17, since it began.
The Historica Foundation of Canada will take over the program from the Canadian Unity Council, which established Encounters in 1982. As part of the agreement between the two organizations, Historica bought the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre, which houses Encounters, from the CUC for $1.5 million.
Historica will rename the program Historica-Encounters with Canada.
George Addy, Chair of the Canadian Unity Council and Avie Bennett, C.C., O.Ont, Chairman of the Board of the Historica Foundation, said that Canadian young people are the real beneficiaries of the deal between the two organizations.
“The longevity of Encounters and the number of young people it has touched are a vivid illustration of its value. Historica will build on those foundations as it assumes the direction of Canada’s premier citizenship program,” said Mr. Bennett.
“Historica and Encounters share the goal of bringing together youth from across the country. Historica’s engagement means that a unique program that has contributed so much to Canadian youth will not be lost,” said Mr. Addy.
