A distinguished guest and EWC alumna visits the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre
On February 2, 2012, Minister of Labour, Lisa Raitt, paid a quick visit to the Centre to meet the participants and visit the facility. Ms. Raitt was first elected to the House of Commons in 2008 and re-elected in 2011. She was appointed Minister of Natural Resources in October 2008 and Minister of Labour in January 2010.
The Minister spoke to the Sports & Fitness participants, informing them that she was an EWC participant in 1985. She came from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and like many of them, left her community by herself for the very first time. She recalled taking a long train ride to get to Ottawa, and experiencing many new things during her week – and, of course, entering the House of Commons for the first time ever. She said it was the furthest thing from her mind then that, 30 years later, she would return to Ottawa and the Terry Fox Centre as both a Member of Parliament and minister of the federal government.
Minister Raitt briefly talked about her role as a woman in politics. She also thanked the staff, teacher-monitors, board members and volunteers for all their hard work and dedication in maintaining and running this great program which, she said, “contributes in bringing out the best qualities in each participant. It’s a program beyond compare!”
She then took a quick tour of the Centre with Director General Linda Brunet, and concluded her visit by saying: “My second visit to the Terry Fox Canadian Centre was as memorable as the first.”
