Study Abroad This Summer: Beaverbrook Vimy Prize - Application Deadline December 31, 2011
Every year, two fortunate Encounters with Canada participants have the exceptional opportunity to take part in a spectacular two-week European experience. These prize winners, led by recognized experts, participate in educational seminars and guided museum tours to such places as the iconic Vimy War Memorial and historic battlefields and gravesites in England, France and Belgium.
The prize honours the memory of Lord Beaverbrook, William Maxwell Aitken, born in Maple, Ontario in 1879, Canadian entrepreneur extraordinaire and influential cabinet minister in two war-time governments during World War I and II. The prize also pays tribute to Canadian forces, who against all odds, captured the seemingly impregnable Vimy Ridge from the Germans in April 1917. More importantly, this victory is seen as a turning point in the history of Canada.
Encounters with Canada participants have been fortunate to take part in such a prestigious award. Recent winners include Robert Radke from Spiritwood, Saskatchewan and Steven Fullerton from Brookside, Nova Scotia in 2011, and Sarah Neuburger of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Ian Harrison of Hamilton, Ontario and 2010.
