EWC participants witness the new Governor General’s swearing-in ceremony
On October 1, 2010, 72 Encounters with Canada (EWC) participants, representing all our country’s provinces and territories, had the immense privilege of personally watching the installation of the new Governor General, David Johnston, at Parliament, followed by a cocktail reception.
With the eyes of the nation viewing this historic event, these students had the unique opportunity to witness it live. Upon exiting the Senate chamber after Dr. Johnston’s installation, the 72 EWC participants were among 143 Canadians – one person for every year of Confederation – who had the distinct honour to congratulate the new vice-regal couple on behalf of their nation. Our participants represented the youth of Canada; others, including veterans, represented our country’s past and present leaders.
“I was here at Parliament on Monday for the first time in my life and was taken on a guided tour along with the other EWC participants,” said a young girl from Saskatchewan. “Today, I witnessed first-hand this impressive historic event, and I will never forget this moment.” “He asked my name and which province I came from,” exclaimed another participant, thrilled that the new Governor General would take time to speak to her. Truly a memorable experience for all those lucky enough to be involved!
