United Nations International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding
On December 18, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, proclaiming the year commencing August 12, 2010 as the International Year of Youth.
With this initiative, the UN hopes to "harness the energy, imagination and initiative of the world’s youth in overcoming the challenges facing humankind, from enhancing peace to boosting economic development" and "to encourage dialogue and understanding across generations and promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and freedoms, and solidarity."
Encounters with Canada is very excited about this upcoming year and the possibilities it opens, because the International Year of Youth’s mission is at the very heart of our program. As Canada's largest and pre-eminent youth forum, we have been engaging Canadian youth for close to 30 years. We support any outreach program that creates opportunities for the young people of Canada to learn and grow. Further, the International Year of Youth will raise awareness of the important contributions our youth make to our country’s development.
"The International Year is about advancing the full and effective participation of youth in all aspects of society. We encourage all sectors of society to work in partnership with youth and youth organizations to better understand their needs and concerns and to recognize the contributions that they can make to society."
The International Year of Youth is being celebrated from August 12, 2010 to August 11, 2011.
